Either bad/corroded terminal(s) on the battery,or solenoid,OR the solenoid is crapping out(what my money is on).Next time it does it,tell him to tap the solenoid with something and see what it does.

like Eric mentioned before my post, check the terminals/cables for corrosion. Also check and see if the battery has low voltage

Also,I just remembered, mine had a similar problem(the '95 F-150 in my sig),check the connections on the starter, especially the spade connector. The rivet in the middle of mine got loose, and did the same thing.I fixed it by using a flat punch and hammer to tighten up the rivet, then put a dab of solder on it.

get a volt meter check battery voltage then check voltage on the hot side of solenoid and possibly check voltage on the small switch wire that runs from switch to solenoid while someone turn the switch should be around 12 volts. sometimes it gets bad contact or broke etc.it is the one connected where the letter i is. I had to put a new terninal on mine 10 cent fix. maybe this will help. good luck correction its the one connected to letter s
