well i started on this to be a car to sale about a year ago and it has become a project that i like. picked car up at a good deal on some swapping around with my crazy brother.it was all stock except a few small things like it had subframe connectors and 373 gears. well heads were off engine when i got it and ecm and maf was gone. I also almost sold shortblock for 150. whew glad i did not do that!well I started with freshening up shortblock which was in good shape and was balanced. And luck would have it that a good friend of mine needed help on his 95 cobra and decided to give me a set of 72 cast iron heads that were cnc ported with bigger valves and dual springs with a set of 1.6 crane roller rocks. So it got started. Then I needed a cam and my brother called one day and said he found a crane powermax 2040 for 45 bucks so I bought it. then came across a trade on a 650 dp. so all and all the car is running well and I like it. it now has autometer 5 tach, 2 5/8 gauges ,torker 2 intake, underdrives, fordmotorsport wires, hei dizzy, headmen midlength headers, with h pipe and flows. so I guess it has became my project because I cant seem to stop tuning and modifying it. here is some pics

after examaning my old suspension parts and observing the dents in the driveshaft tunnel I have come to a conclusion of what the heck was I thinking. I now know when I was launching the car the driveshaft against the bottom of the car had to be acting like a break when it was in a bind. That fixed now with a good air fuel and correct bottle pressure my ets should improve a great deal. But before I return to track I think it would be in my best interest to install the driveshaft loop that has been laying in the shop for over a year. and maybe start thinking a little more on the saftey end before trying to add more power.

Get that "squat" problem remedied. It should not squat down so far that it beats up the tunnel. Check pinion angle during suspension articulation.

And yes, put the DS loop in.

Thinking about going auto trans.would like opinions on how this may or may not change my track performance.would it slow my 60s down, mile pr hour ets etc, etc, thx in advance for opinions

coupe
06-11-2008, 09:18 PM
Depends on the automatic. A crisp shifting auto with the right converter will probably show improvements everywhere on the track.

A sloppy trans, or the wrong converter, and you'll most likely see lower mph, sluggish 60', and the ET will suffer.

ok everyone since joe let the cat out of the bag!I have decided to big block the gt. I have been buying, trading ,begging and borrowing parts for this swap for 2 years or so. I have a made up mind to push this through to a finished project.it will not be to crazy of a build just a mild mannered streetable motor. This is what I have so far 429 3.59 stroke big block with a xe274h cam 562 INT 564 EXH 274 286 dur cam, flat top pistons, aluminum heads, stealth intake, march alum pulleys, hei dizzy, have not decided on carb,1.7 rockers, hooker headers,I will post up picks as I go of the suspension and mods to install it. maybe I will not be disapointed in it.IF it does not perform n/a I will spray the crap out of it. all opinions and advice is welcome.I am still doing this on a budget.so alot of parts are used or new bought from someone no longer needing them or traded for.I would like to have a big block forum here. I know there are other big block guys out there. yes I know there are other sites for big blocks but this is my home website that I like to hang out on.I love the people here. I feel at home.On other sites I feel like I am a pion because I dont have a rep or some big money invested in my car but here on this site it is all about the passion not how much money you have spent or how smart you are thx guys.

That's what it's about. And don't be surprised if that car is faster than you plan. I would ditch the towing cam (:D) and install something a little bigger...you have nice cylinder heads.

Go ahead and have a nitrous plate on there, because it will love it...should run some easy 10's short-shifting.

its ready!! worked all day sat on the carb! i have never pulled a carb off so much and changed jets, squirters, and pump cams in my life!! but i did learn alot.
i got the cruise and idle set at around 14.2-15.0 on AFR. and wide open throttle is 12.5-12.8. i have a lean tip in in 3rd at 3000 rpm where we are testing the AFR. i really need the aux box and a TPS on the carb and a few other sensors would not hurt. well until next time.

Had to deck block .040.The older style trw pistons are designed for 69 and 70 short deck 351 blocks. This is a 84 block. trw usually sit .015 to .020 in the hole. so using the older style pistons in the taller newer style block put it .041 in the hole. I was going for a .040 quench and the gasket thickness was .039. I now have the .040 quench.with the cam intake closing at 61 abdc gives it a 7.98 dynamic compression which should run on most pump gas.should be a good all around driver and still be fun when the hammer is dropped.no exotic parts here just good ole ford iron on a budget.

The valve timing overlap and me unshrouding the exhaust valve is creating one hell off a supercharge suction.
Meaning the exhaust flowing out is sucking the intake charge in when both valves r open at the same time.

Thats why i emphasized on exhaust and shaped it the direction i did.
The worst dead spot on an engine is when the intake valve first opens it takes a sec to get the air moving again.
Thats y the suction of the exhaust exiting helps so much.
It kinda like jump starting the intake flow.
To cut down on reverb which is exhaust tryn to push into the intake i curved and unshrouded on the far side of exhaust valve.
This creates an effect that makes the engine run as if the heads were better flowing than what the flow bench showed.

I also closed intake valve earlier on compression stroke to give me a longer stroke of compression which gives me more air/fuel being compressed.
Causing the engine to respond as if it had a longer stroke than it does.which it is creating a longer actual compression stroke or dcr.
These couple things together
Makes this int.248@050
Exh.256@050 and single plane intake act as if it has a torque cam in it and still runs like a high dur cam once rpms go up.
Let me emphasize that my approach here is for naturally aspirated with some spray and decent street manners.
I will try to post up some drawings to try and show some of this.
But it will be a few days when I have time.
There were other things also like gasket matching
balancing, tightenig quench etc..but i just felt like sharing
this.for some reason.

I am by no means an expert but i do try to keep learning and applying things that work.I like nice parts too.
But sometimes they are not in the budget and I have to make what I have work the best i can.

I am not trying to confuse anyone
Just explain some of my purpose and theory here.
Also show that a strong running engine is not all about buying and bolting on parts. There needs to be a thought out plan of assembling the parts and doing the math to get the most out of what you do have.
By all means add, debate or criticize anything i have shared here.
I was kind of skeptical bout sharing it but what the hell you all already know I am crazy.lol
Hope this helps. Clyde

MM's stuff is flat out awesome. I have a full "maximum grip" package on the GT. Rides like a race car, but it handles better than I thought was even possible for a Mustang. I don't know much about their stuff in a drag racing setup, but the torque arm seems like it would be great for drag racing. My car has WAY more traction off the line than it did with the stock 4 link.
