It is really steep in the 4-cylinder T5...something like 3.90:1.

3.97 is the 1st gear for a 4 cylinder

depends on the year. I think the one in my svo is over 4:1

yeah it was year and car dependent.

Example...My svo gear ratios were..

1st- 4.03:1
2nd- 2.37
3rd- 1.50
4th 1.00
5th .86

These changed the next year to
1st- 3.50
2nd- 2.14
3rd- 1.36
4th- 1.00
5th- .78

I think turbocoupes were a little different and like you mentioned, most 'standard' 4cyl LX's had the 3.97 1st but I am not sure what years.

If your trans still has the build tag, check out this site - www.allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/349.shtml (http://www.allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/349.shtml)... It was a help when I put a turbo coupe t-5 in my wife's 2.3
