View Full Version : My next engine project.

I'm going to start on building a new engine this fall.Nothing wrong with my 306 mechanically speaking, and it only has 2000 miles on it to date. This is going to be an ongoing project for about a year or so,and it will have the best of everything (as time and money allow)so I'm looking for some opinions from you guys. I have the old 302 roller block out of my coupe that needs a rebuild, and if I go with that,I'm looking at either a 331 or 347.My other idea was a 351 based engine, since I know where I can get one out of an E-350 van cheap (which would be a bonus since they already have the double sump pan). Tonya heard Brians 418 last night, looked at me and said,"I think you need a bigger engine!"

there's no replacement for displacement :D

If you're on a tight budget (like most of us are) and you have a lot of 8.2" motor stuff on your 302 that you would like to reuse, then I would recommend not going 351. With the 9.5" motor, you'll have to buy new headers, intake, hood, distributor, flywheel, balacer, etc.... However, if you plan on buying that stuff anyway, then you may as well go with the 351-based motor.

True, the van I was talking about is at the pull a part, and has everything on it,minus the intake(which I would toss anyhow) and 1 head. But I would still need the headers and all the other stuff you mentioned.I've been leaning toward a 347 since I already have that other block.

Sorry about that. :D

:lol:No apology needed! It sounds mean as hell, and thankfully I have a wife that likes cars too!:D

I vote 347. Some good 2.02 valve'd heads, F cam or one of the AFM cams, and a 150 shot :D

hell do a solid roller 347 and turn it like 8000 rpm with a 150 shot. talk about a screamer

So who makes the best 347 kit? I know Eagle makes good stuff, and I've seen the Scat kits, but I have'nt heard much about their Ford stuff.I know back when I used to mess around with aircooled VW's their stuff was good.Or would I be better off putting together my own kit?

I don't think the 347 would survive very long being turned to 8000 on a regular basis.

I vote for sticking with the 302 block since you already have a lot of what you'd need.

by the time that thing spooled up a big block car would be tripping the beams at the big end...

or put one of those on a stock big block:metal: i think that by the time u put the money in a 331 or 347 u could build 30 or 40 over 351 that u can have more fun with and have higher hp output with out buying a block. i think the new model 302 roller blocks are a waste of money.

go with the 331!!! I have a had several 347's and always have a block issue. 350hp is easy to get even with a 306.With your hp goal you wont have to have tip top parts so it will be easy on the wallet.Do you plan on lots of street miles with the car? pm me your specs on current engine.

I built a 302 (+0.030) with some GT40P heads (that had been hogged out by the previous owner), Pro Products 4bbl intake w/an Edelbrock 600 carb (customer request), and a rather healthy cam (cant remember exact specs) and made right around 320hp.

Piston to rod ratio is not that great on a 347 life will be shorter 351 will live longer under same hp conditions. I say big block or bust lol

on a serious note though. 331 afr 205s w/ 58cc chambers big cam and pop up pistons. with a little spray that would be almost more than what you are looking for. and the good thing is that it wouldnt be like a supercharger or turbo to where the power is there all the time. you would just have a little kick in the pants incase a damn f body idiot thinks hes hot shit.

I guess that is just personal preference.

Always on > bottle refills. :yup: If you don't want it "always on", just don't mash the pedal down as far. :D
