when i bought this car and put it on the lift i found out the tranny had been swapped to a tremec.

1st-question is how can i tell what model it is. i can see tremec stamped on the side but i didn't see any numbers or anything stating the model.

2nd- question is i need a shifter for it. any suggestions from experiance. i hardly ever miss a gear like it is but everyone tells me i need a short throw shifter.

i haven't been dealing with mustangs long i was big into drag racing chevy s10s

Tremec now owns Borg Warner. Most newer T-5's will have the "Tremec" name on it some place. It's likely just the stock T-5 that came in the car.

If you have a digital camera, snap a few pics of it and maybe we can confirm that.

A short shifter will make shifting that much easier and quicker. Go ahead and get one; you more than likely won't regret it. I personally like the Steeda Tri-ax shifter... others prefer the Pro-5.0.

on top the tranny it looks like it has two plates that look like you might could move the shifter. i know you prob cant but they have 4 bolts just like where the shifter sits.

also the trans mount sits in a different place from where the stock once was. looks like about an inch diff. also the rear seal does not line up where the stock one was meaning. i can tell where one seal was rubbing and now the tranny thats in it now is rubbing diff spot like tranny is shorter.

guy i bought it from said he paid 2800 (600 labor) for a new tranny swap. i didnt know of any other tranny besides t-5 so i didnt ask question now i cant get in touch with him

hmm. might actually be a 3550. What's the bellhousing look like? Get some pics up and we'll decipher it for ya! Hope it is a 3550...that's a really nice trans.

Yep, it's probably a TKO. You can tell the series by the pattern of the shifter bolt holes; both transmissios use 6 bolts, but the newer TKO II (500/600) have them the same distance apart. On the older TKO's (3550), the front two bolts are closer together than the back four.

If it still retains the stock driveshaft and original driveshaft yoke then it is more than likely a tremec 3550 or a newer tko 500.

Also from what you are describing. You need to install a driveshaft spacer too.I had an issue on my old 94 where the driveshaft yoke wasn't engaged far enough into the trans and caused a few problems.

UPR makes a nice driveshaft spacer that takes about 10 minutes to install.

Did they change the 500's to a 28-spline output recently?

When I bought mine two years ago, the TKO 500 had a 31-spline output just like the 600 did.

you could order the 500 either way at one time. But it had to be ordered that way.

Yep. 3550 or TKO (4250), depending on the input/output shaft splines.

Here's the 3550 pic for reference:

And here's a late-model 500/600:

yeah make sure your input shaft bearing gets replaced when you change the input shaft and change the bearing retainer too just for good measure.

i called seco performance today for a shifter and they said there was no such trans as a 3550 the guy said only thing he knows of is 3650. needless to say he didnt have a shifter. I didnt want to wait on mail order but guess i will.

Where is the best place to order one from. and which is the best one?

you will need to get out a ford magazine and pick one and make sure you tell them you have the old style tremmec.Yours is actually adjustable and would probably benefit from just a longer shifter handle.Try a chrome hurst upper they are usually sold at performace stores as upper only with a ball shift knob.I personally use them makes a tremmec come closer to shifting like a t5.People think you need the shortest upper shifter known to man and that really makes it harder to shift a notchy ass tremmec

I had a PRO 5.0 in my last tranny and I really like it. My TKO600 has the MGW. Either one will work fine

That thing went 6.40-6.50 in the 1/8th on his turbo car; made over 600 at the tires through it. Pretty sure it's a 26-spline full-blown TKO.
