Just wear and tear usually. Most are welded around that seem and they usually break. I never broke mine but have replaced it with a one piece unit. Not sure if they are the same from a t56 but they are about $100

Its a steel sleeve pressed into an aluminum housing, I am guessing its a 3650?
I have seen the pressed in SN95 T5 bearing reatiners seperate and the old fox all aluminum reatiners break but I have had very little exposure to the later transmissions.

Yeah I just noticed the shifter & opening in the pics.
When the pilot bearing goes south it will kill the bearings in the input shaft as in the pocket bearings and the Torrington(thrust), If run long enough it will eat up the input gear(aka the main drive gear) and the countershaft(aka cluster gear) along with the pilot end of the main shaft.
As far as the release bearing(aka TOB)sleeve I would say it died from vibration.

Gotta have spare parts, I am getting close to having a teenager driving. She is getting anxious and I am getting nervous, If anyone is giving away useable input shafts and cluster gears I am taking donations.
