the battery is shot in the car, i cant even get it to charge. so i will be replacing it so i can at least start the car on a regualar basis.

what is the best battery? i have been looking at the optima. is it really worth the extra money, i know they look good.

second ?, cant you use a marine battery? i thought you could but have heard a few people say otherwise.

thanks

I think they are worth it. I run Optima red tops in both of my cars and used to run one in my truck (before it was stollen :().

FWIW: I have an advanced autoparts battery (their best one) in my dad's Dodge...it had been in Reeds Buick since '01 or '02. Gave it to me last summer. It would NOT turn the car over one night in November when it was cold...so I let it sit (in driveway for 3-months). Tried again 3-days ago (never charged it or anything)..and it cranked over fine. Still showed full charge everything :yup: . The advance batteries are good.

Yep, I'm the same way as you, Eric. I'll keep a good battery in a car, but once it needs replacing, I will spend a little extra and get an Optima; that's what I did with the BMW. Hell, once I get ready to fire the Z up, the first thing I will buy is a red-top for it. :nice:

Optimas take ALOT of abuse and keep coming back for more. :nice: :nice:

What is the difference between the red top, and the blue top marine battery?

What is the difference between the red top, and the blue top marine battery?
The Blue and Yellow top are deep cycle batteries; meaning they can be discharged completely and recharged (many times) without harming the battery. They are typically used in marine applications (trolling motors) or car stereo applications (where the stereos run a lot without the car running).

There is no issue in using them just a cranking battery in a car. . . except that they cost more.

Chris could actually get the Optima 34M which (even though it is a blue-top), it's not a deep cycle battery. I think it only cost a little more than the Optima 34 red-top. However, one of the downsides of the blue tops is that in addition to the standard terminals, they also have threaded posts for a wingnut terminal. Not a real problem, but it may get in the way somewhat.

i will look into it a little more detailed in the next few days. the reason i am considering the deep cycle is because the car probably wont see more than 500 miles in the next couple of years. so i need something that can withstand long periods of setting. but i may save the money on the deepcycle and just get another charger for a standard battery.

I have a Red top in the '85, the car is hardly ever driven and it has never struggled to turn over the engine.

My brother has a Yellow Top in his car trailer for the winch. He never charged it, and it lastest about 7 years or so, and never struggled to pull the car into the trailer.

you could always try one of these to extend the battery life....

thats pretty cool, but i still have to have a new battery regardless. mine wont even hold a charge. of course the corrosion all over the terminals probably doesnt help that issue at all. :(

did anyone have any fitment issues. i think i remember reading somewhere in the past that the optima was too large to use the factory hold down.
