Just wanted your thoughts on my motor combo. Suggestions for improvement, etc..

306cid, DSS forged flat tops, X-303 cam (installed dot to dot now, was 4*adv which put the intake centerline @ 101*), World Windsor Sr heads-milled to 62cc ish 2.02in 1.60exh screw in studs w/ guide plates and 1.6 roller rockers, stock bottom end with ARP rod bolts, stock 93 Cobra induction (65mm tb, 70mm maf, 24lb/hr injectors, GT40 upper and lower, stock fuel rails and regulator) 190 lph fuel pump.

It has a 1" spacer on it to clear the tall valve covers- this is coming off
I will be installing new efi valve covers (FMS-M-6000-C302) partly because I want the stock hood back on it and I think the spacer is hurting me and possibly contributing to idle surge:pray:

Fire away, all coments welcome :D

ditch the cobra intake, look into a larger MAF and t/body. (I ran a PMAS 80mm MAF and a Accufab 75mm t/body on my last n/a combo)

In case you have not already seen it, here are the different combos I put my cobra through

Thanks. What do you think about the cam timing-leave it alone or move it back to 4* adv?

This is a street car that might see an occasional test and tune night

leave it alone.
Reference my edit in the above post too

I would definately like to put an RPM on it, but I will have to make do for now.

My first outing with the new motor felt pretty good but I was expecting more.

It needs a 3.55 gear really bad and once the spacer is gone hopefully the butt dyno will see a big change :metal:

what kind of hood do you have on inquiring minds want to know?

QWKSNKE

What gear is in it now? The stock 3.08? Unless you have 3.55's already laying around, go with 3.73's. They would suit your current combination better.

Personally,I'd have the heads milled to at least 60 cc's,if not 58 cc's,unless you're planning on adding boost in the future.

tayzoid1, right at this moment none, I had a 4" cowl on it but that went back on the coupe I'm selling and I really didn't like the look of it , thought about a 2" cowl but like the stock look on the Cobra

QWKSNKE stock 3.08 now, I was thinking 1st gear would be useless with 3.73s but then again I have never had that in a 5 speed car so IDK

I would love to add some boost at some point, say a 10lb Vortech :metal:

yeah but Bandit is running a higher gear ratio in 1st with 4.10's. I wouldn't do it with a stock geared t-5.

Ok,gotcha. I didn't know what his ratios were in the Tremec.

The one he's selling is a roller.

I don't think you'll feel any difference after removing the spacer... unless it's leaking or something. In theory, it should just move your torque band a bit higher, but it would probably be only barely measurable on a dyno sheet.

I like the combination. Only changes I would make are a Downs Box intake for that Cobra lower (easy swap) and a 3.73 or 4.10 gear. I bet those two changes alone would give you at least a half-second since that X-303 will really like to rev. Then...at a later date, swap in a 331 or 347 stroker and you'll already have enough induction for it.

Have you ever run that style intake on n/a 302-306 motor?
Somebody I knew run one of those Comp box uppers a few years ago and it absolutly killed the bottom end on the motor.
Not to mention they leak like hell too

:yup: Yes I have. I ran a comp-polymers box intake on my '87 coupe for sevareal years...only other mod was the 1970 windsor heads. Ran great...no low-end difference, in fact, the whole motor felt better. Ran 8.98 @ 80mph on stock tires and a stock 3.08 gear in the back! That's not bad for what it was. That very intake is on my brothers 308 with ported E7's now.

The Downs box is a cast aluminum piece that is not as prone to leakage as the COMP box, which is two or three pieces. Mine never leaked though.

I had the downs box back when it came out and loved it.You couldnt get a streetrace with it though because everyone who saw it was like "WTF that aint no regular intake"

Thanks for all the replies :nice:. Once the coupe sells,I will be doing the gears and hopefully I will get motivated to paint it. Previous owner let it get in bad shape. The only intake swaps I'm willing to do on this car need to stay under no more than a 2" cowl and preferably the stock hood.

I need to get a tune done so I can get past the factory rev limiter.

coupe- I would love to build a 347 for it.

Italian LX- I do think the spacer is leaking and I'm going to take it off tonight since ups came yesterday with the new vc's

most aftermarket intakes will clear the stock hood unless you are running a spacer.

But the 2" cowl looks good on a cobra :D

Why bypass the factory limiter when your combo will never make power higher than that anyways?

:hmm: good point. When I think about this motor combo I'm always thinking carb because that's what it was originally built for...the intake for the carb flows better than my Cobra stuff and I was looking at shifting at 6500-6800.

I have a big learning curve ahead for efi. I know very little about tuning it or what all needs to be put together for it to breathe i.e. maf, tb, etc

you have no idea how much of that was used on that POS intake trying to get it to seal. Pretty sure that intake was thrown in the trash when the stock E7 intake was put back on 2 weeks later.

do you have the stock intake or gt40 on it? if its the gt40 upper send it and the lower to TEA and get it worked or.....

Holley systemax intake,accufab 70-75mm tbody,pro m or c&l mass air 80mm,373 gear

you havea stock block so you dont need to buzz major rpm
