Those bearing surfaces don't look to good. You can using any gear set from a 8.8 in it. Its recommended to get a case spreader when doing an aluminumn chunk like that to get the backlash set correctly

Btw I have a whole pumpkin from an 03 irs for sale if your interested in it. 3:55 gears stock in them

+1 on the bearing surfaces. Never seen any that bad.

What do you mean any 8.8? You mean the carrier assy? Being that this is an 01 cobra, it will have to be a 31 spline setup so that the halfshafts will go back in

:werd: The spider gears are different on a 31 spline as well. They have a larger diameter hole in the center for the crosspin. If you have a pull a part close by,the '95 up Explorers, and '86 up (IIRC) F/E series trucks/vans have 31 spline 8.8's.:nice:

Really? We did a gear swap on a late 90's Explorer and it was a 31-spline track-loc rear. Also, my 31-spline in the coupe was taken out of an f150.

 Every Explorer I've seen has had a trac-loc.

We have some of the v6 explorers at the shop with open diff's. I believe all the v8's had a trac loc

Maybe all the V6 ones I've seen had the towing package. Our '96 4.0 has a 3:73 trac loc.

Probably so, we had some v6's with the trac loc as well. They had the 3.73's to

Yeah, the one we worked on was a 2WD V6.

As far as trac-loc, I am pretty sure it was a towing package thing in the Explorers. However, I did not know that they were 31 spline

I would hope so since the 'splined' end of an axle/halfshaft has to go through them :D

I am a vendor on Explorerforum so I am very familiar with these vehicles. On Gen1 (1990-94) are open and 28T unless it has a towing package. If I am not mistaken these have small bearing axles in them. All Gen 2 (1995-2001 2-only v6 or 4 door v-8 or v6)/sport trac up to 2005 have 31T carrier with big bearing axles. 90% have Trac Lok rears, especially 1997 and later models. Gen 3 (2002 4 doors) have independant rears with 31T aluminum center sections. All Gen 4 2006-current 4doors & Sport Tracs have independant rear with 31T center sections. The primary gears you will find in these are 3.55-3.73, some models have 4.10-very few. The towing package always includes the Trac Lok-j
