Well after having two nitrous mustangs, and two supercharged mustangs I've decided to go a different route. Here is the progress so far.

So I talked to the machine shop today to see if any of the stroker kit parts had come in yet, and see what balance the motor was going to be. Well the guy says I need to bring him a cylinder head? He said they sent the wrong pistons and the only compression ratio pistons they had for the tw head was a 10.1 so now its gonna cost me more because they have to fly cut the piston for the valve relief. Im so pissed I feel like setting the car on fire and calling the insurance company. I payed $1900.00 + $200.00 for a 383 stroker kit with 8.1 or 8 1/2.1 compression for twisted wedge heads I specificly told the guy what heads I had because I knew he would have to get custom pistons. Well then the one week motor project hit a snag they couldn't find the right crank for the 383 so without my permission (not even a phone call) they take it upon themselves to change it to a 408 kit. The only way I found out is because I called to check on the parts myself. Now they got the wrong pistons and I have to pay more for the machine work and have the pistons re-balanced. One more setback and I may call it quits for good.:fuss:

Talked to the machine shop today, told them to send the stroker kit back and I will be there when they open tomorrow to get my money and block. I called PROBE INDUSTRIES and got a price on a stroker kit, $1,689 for the 408 stroker probe kit with free balancing and 9.1 compression. Is 9.1 compression good for a turbo motor? I also called the machine shop that has done all of my past headwork he is going to bore, notch, balance, and blueprint my motor for what the other place was going to charge to bore the block, and flycut the pistons.
Should I get the internal balanced kit or the 28oz. kit? or does it really matter? I have a Fidanza aluminum flywheel and have to order a new friction insert so only thing I would have to buy is the harmonic balancer.

grabbinandstabbin
06-24-2010, 09:42 PM
on the balancer i would say go 0 balance. but that is my opinion. for the balance on the crank, rods and pistons there is a guy in anniston named ed chandler that has done a couple balance jobs for me in the past and did me a dang good job at a fair price. i have always been told not to buy a balanced kit. i was told it is a waste of money and that it would need to be rebalanced anyway. i also found that it was cheaper to buy the unbalanced kit and pay him to balance it that it was to buy the balanced kit. lmk if you need his number. he only charged me 125 to balance everything but that was several years ago.

Probe has a deal going on right now if you buy a stroker kit from them you get the balance for free, but I am going to have the new machine shop do a blueprint and balance job to make sure everything will hold together with no vibration, what is a good harmonic balancer to get? he is going to balance the kit with the harmonic balancer, flywheel, and clutch assymbly.

Yea I was looking at the ATI, and the Romac just havn't made up my mind. is 9 to 1 a good compression ratio for a turbo car?

SlowJoe
06-25-2010, 01:06 PM
U have to thank is it 9 to1 with piston at 0 deck? How deep is ur piston going to be at tdc? 9 to 1 will work good but u will need to stay on top of the tune. As i have been told. What cc dish are they?

nxcoupe
06-26-2010, 09:13 AM
yeah, have to measure how far down in the hole they are at tdc and then you can always run a thicker cometic head gasket to drop it down a bit more. Intercooled turbos are easier on parts, but they are still hotter than an intercooled centri blower.

9:1 is about perfect. I am around 8.5:1 and wish I had gone a little more due to the smallish cubes.

With today's better cylinder heads and turbo-cams, I would not hesitate to run 10:1 and shoot a little methanol if I had to run a little more boost to make the power.

Really? I would think you'd have to pull so much timing out that it would leave a lot on the table? What about using E85 with that compression ratio?

The lowest compression pistons probe industries has are 9 to 1 and they will have to cut a valve relief in them for the trick flow heads. I really want to be able to run pump gas mixed with a little race gas. Looking to make at least 650rwhp.

06-27-2010, 03:45 AM
Well I am a probe dealer and all their pistons come either TFS or inline valve config, or they come with both if they are an older set. Why do they have to cut valve reliefs? Did they get the wrong kit or just out of the pistons? If I can help out in any way let me know. If you had a larger combustion chamer you could knock it down some, but as matt said, don't think it's an issue anyway.

I haven't ordered the kit yet I talked to a guy named Eric last week I saw the twisted wedge pistons but Eric said the lowest compression ratio for them was 10 to 1 so he was going to take a different piston that was 9 to 1 and cut the valve reliefs in them for the twisted wedge 61cc heads.

Want 408 stroker kit for a 94 lightning stock block that will hold 700hp with - 9 to 1 compression, 4.030 bore, forged crankshaft, h-beam rods, neutral or internal balance and yes dished piston for the tfs. I think Eric said the kit would be 1638 + the money for the piston cuts, and free balancing

Its a 408/410 ci. x7 with their patented x groove to keep from fuel wash down and cylinder wall scratches. I got them talked down from $2200 to $1999 out the door shipping and all and theres will be 9.3 to 1 compression with my heads and no flycutting.

It is still a 10.5 inch but it has brass pucks on both sides, I told the guy I wanted something that would be good for between 650-750hp. He built this and told me to make sure I had plenty of room between me and the car in front of me before I take off, and be ready for the dash to land in my lap. I got a really good deal on it. What do you mean?
Just because it runs doesn't mean its finished. I still have to hook up the brake lines, clean up some wiring, get it running good enough to drive and put some street miles on it, get a front end alignment because of the k-member swap and running the foxbody a-arms, I plan on re-doing the fuel system with a sump tank and a1000 instead of the intank and external and then maybe a custom tune.

Oh no he's not driving my car! He has a buddy that has the civic who claims it's gonna spank the stang so they both put some money on my car vs the civic. I love how they come out of the woodworks looking for you when your car is nowhere near finished but when your driving around town looking for them and pull up beside them at the light they shake their head no.

Finnaly got to drive it and it runs great:banana:. I was very suprised at the way it runs with it not having a tune. It runs rich but until I get some miles on it I think it will be ok. The turbo spools really fast and at 6psi. just bliping the throttle it feels stronger than the supercharger did at 10psi. THANKS MATT AND REED (SUPERNATURAL TURBO)! the turbo sounds wicked just cruising around the streets listening to it spool up.

Yea Im just excited to be able to drive it again! Its a little loud right now because it has about 6 foot of pipe and the mufflers are not welded on yet but its not too much louder than it was with the single chambers dumped at the rear, just loud enough to get the neighbors attention!

another major setback. The car started smoking on the number 4 cylinder so I towed it to my shop in Pell City and pulled the motor and trans back out pulled the oil pan, cylinder head and number 4 piston to inspect and Im pretty sure I had a valve guide go bad. So I was going drop the cylinder head at the machine shop last week after work and start getting the new gaskets and stuff together when DISASTER STRUCK.
For those of you who don't know and have not seen pics Pell City was hit by a tornado and my shop got hit pretty hard here are some pics.

Went to the body shop today and took a few pics. They are waiting for the new fender, and some other parts to come in but this is as it sits. It was the first time I have seen it without all of the gritty grimmy stuff all over it and every body panel is dinged and scratched so it looks like it will get a brand new paint job.

Stopped by the body shop today to check on the progress and took a few pics. The top of the car is going to be sanded all the way to the metal and be completly redone to get rid of the crows feet that showed up and as you can see I have decided to go wingless this time. Now there is about a week worth of block sanding to be done and brand new fresh paint job!

The car has been painted three times in the last month and a half thanks to some a55 hole walking through the bodyshop parking lot and of all 100 cars in the parking lot pick my fresh painted, wetsanded, and buffed mustang to run their key around! this is the car as it looks now if they can just keep someone from keying the car this time I may get to pick it up next week.

Hopefully the motor will be going in sunday since its the only free day I have to work on it this coming weekend. I went last weekend to the shop and degreased the engine, pressure washed all of the sandy grit out, blew all of the water out, put the new rings on the piston of the cylinder that was burning oil and added the new windage tray that I bought. Here are the pictures I took this morning after I loaded it up the bumper was in the car, I didn't want to rip the bumper off the car trying to load it on the trailer.
