How much is acceptable???? I have a feeling mine is WAYYYYYYY too much.. :-(

How much end play do you have? IIRC, somebody makes thrust bearings (#3 main bearing) thicker than stock to compensate for excessive end play. BUT, if it's a stock, non-stroker crank, a new one isn't that expensive.

No more than .002 I believe

ya....well, let's just say all the feeler gauges added up to almost .250 :yikes:

and no that's not a typo....that is .250

bout to go check the converter and see if that's the culprit...after I go blow chunks...(this is making me sick to my stomach!!!) :(

:devileek:DAMN! And I thought the main and rod bearing clearance (.035") on my old 302 was bad!

actually it was a between 1/8 and 1/4....that is between the main and the crank, not between the crank and bearing surface. Nonetheless....looks like I'm about to yank my crank (and not for the fun of it!!!) :( and check the thrust bearing. The convertor was fine so I can rule that out as far as ballooning (supposedly has the anti-ballooning plates in it (or whatever the hell it is they do to em))

I had to clean the shop up before I could even start to work on anything!!!

put it this way...it moved so much that it rubbed up against my main support(pieces holder when it splits)

 I got the crank out...got some discoloration on some of the throws. That's to be expected I suppose, but it looks like the crank will be ok.

It's a 331 setup. 5.4 rods I "think"...eagle h-beams, probe pistons, and eagle crank

Clevite 77 bearings are in it now

At least the girdle is custom machined if the crank ever does that again :D

I've seen similar issues when the transmission converter-to-crank spacing is off...or the pilot part of the converter is too tight (painted or powdercoated). Also seen issues when the driveshaft was too long and pushes everything forward under acceleration.

What clearance did you start out with? Should be setup somewhere around .006-.007 ideally. How long did you drive it before this issue?

Matt, not sure what the initial endplay was set at....the engine was built about 5-6 years ago by Billy Kimmel from Columbus, GA and has less than 1K N/A miles on it and "maybe" 20 turbo'd miles on it. Part of the reason I could never hear the racket it was making was the Edelbrock Gear drive and the preponderance of exhaust leaks!!!

At least I found it now instead of later.

I've checked the converter and haven't seen anything that looks fishy, but that's not to say that it's not seating properly against the flexplate/crank.

A buddy of mine who works for Jasper and is a mustang guy seems to think it was b/c of misaligned accessories (which is entirely possible) as I "used" to have a cobbled together Trickflow A/C delete kit on there (probably 95% of the mileage that's on the car) that I KNOW for a fact wasn't aligned just right....

All I know is that the crank is more than likely FUBAR'D .....

Misaligned accessories isn't going to do that. The damage is on the back side so follow what Coupe said to check and you will find the problem.

Just got back from machine shop and they seem pretty confident that the crank can be welded up and then the mains ground .010, check for straightness, etc....for somewhere in the $200-250 range, which is hella lot better than NEW CRANK, rebalance, and all the other nic-nak BS...
