I recently found out that there are two different O2 sensors specified by Ford for the 87-93 model year Mustangs. It appears that the DY-605 was used during 87-90 and the DY-606 was used from 90-93.

Does anyone know what the difference in the sensors are?

Here's a link to 50resto's site showing the different sensors specified for each year:

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Did Speed Density Mustangs have O2's?

I'm looking around, but maybe its 3 and 4 wire sensors. Both have heaters but the 4 wire has also has the auxiliary ground for the heater circuit, as opposed to being grounded only through the exhaust or uses the common ground as the signal.

:yup:

Huh, and I though they just run off EEC control only. What does the computer use the input for because I was under the thought that the Speed Density cars did not do any "adaptive strategy" and fuel control.

Uses it for the same thing all other mustangs do, feedback for fine adjustments of the mixture under closed loop.

Nope, they are both 3-wire HEGOs.

Okay, couldn't remember if my 89 was a 3 or 4 wire. When did Ford go to 4 wire? Any idea?

My 86 has 3wire and it was speed density originally. It now is Mass Air and uses the same O2's. They are the E6 part number.

This site explains some of the differences. The main difference is the connector. I have the one in fig. 5

Yeah, from looking at those spec sheets, it looks like the DY-605 and DY-606 have the same connector and specifications (figure 8). I guess it may have just been some minor manufaturer change by NTK that was enough to warrant a new part number and Ford opted for the updated version sometime during the 1990 production.

After thinking about it, there couldn't have been any operational differences since the EEC really didn't change between those years; the A9L, for example, spanned well before and after '90.

That is a cool pdf file. Thanks Clint. :nice:

I cant seem to find the original article that I had reguarding the differences, but I know I had it when I did the MASS AIR conversion. This article stated that the operational specs were the same but one of them had a better heat range and longer life span. I wish I remembered which one it was.

I just saw your reply on the TwEECer board about you remember reading about the difference being quality. I would hope the DY-606 is better quality since it's the newer of the two... and since it cost $10 more through Ford. :D

Not sure, but I hope so!
