I got my FRPP 3.73's and in the box there is a small white gear that comes with the gears. Could this be what recalibrates my speedo? I was told I would have to buy a speed calibrator from Dallas Mustang, so I am not sure what this gear is...

Thanks!

David

Wow, Ford is including a 23T speedo gear with their 3.73 gears now?

That's strange since that's not even a Ford part. :hmm:

I believe you can do it either way, but I believe you'll be more accurate with the SpeedCal.

Somebody may want to confirm whether I'm correect or not.... or if there are other issues involved.

Btw, if you end up not using the speedo gear, I want it. ;)

Maybe the guy he got them from threw it in

Brian, I bought these gears from a dude that has had them for a while, at least a year or so, I paid $100 so I guess I came out pretty good. If that is what they include to calibrate the speedo, I will probably go ahead and use that and test out how accurate it is after Lee installs the gears. Anyway thanks for the help!

BTW, did you get your windows tinted? I could swear the day you came to the shop here they weren't, then one day I passed you on 431 and they were tinted?

I forgot you got them from someone -- I was thinking you ordered them.

Yeah, they've been tinted for a few months now.

I thought you had to use an electronic speedcal on '96+ cars.

Why? They have speedometer gears just like the earlier model Mustangs.

Just what I heard.

I think that might have been what Speedsouth told me when I was looking into putting gears in my '98 (in my pre-Mafia/Area 51 days).

Yeah, you can use either, but the speed-cal is more acurate.

No, both autos and manuals use a similar gear -- the automatics just have a longer shaft protruding from the gear. :yup:

. . . now that I think of it, Jeane corrected her speedo by using a 23T gear in her '96 GT. I remmber that because it was a gear for a 5-speed and I wasn't sure if it would hold up in an automatic... i guess it did because i haven't heard her complain. :D

T-45's can use a gear. 3650's cannot. If i remember correctly David will have a 3650 and will need a speedcal

Lee is right. 02 up require a speedcal, its preferred for any 99+ 5-speed car acctually, as the gears are not as accurate as a speedcal. Any 99+ auto tranny car requires a chip no questions asked.

If you are getting a chip later down teh road, I would go ahead and opt for the chip instead of a speedcal. Save yourself having to spend 100 on the speedcal and then get a chip a short time afterwards, when the chip can calibrate your speedo as well. I would wait and save enough to have a chip burnt for your application with the gear change and then install it at the same time you have gears installed.
