I dont know a whole lot about transmission period, except that the c4's can be built to hold a ton of power. What about the c6 though, I though I read where someon said they will actually hold up better than the c4's. Is this the case? How do the trannys compare as far as performance and weight?

From what I have been told, the C6 eats up a ton more hp over the C4. I also believe the C4 can be built up cheaper and hold nearly the same amount of power as a built C6

I believe C6s are quite a bit heavier as well.

I believe C6s are quite a bit heavier as well.

If I remember correctly during the building of my tranny, this is true. The reasoning is the case is actually slightly thicker which translates to being stronger. But everything else is pretty much the same as the c4.

C6 everything is bigger, bell is big converter is huge etc.. This tranny work perfect behind a BBF and Trucks, but in a Fox body with a 302 or even a 408, it robs all the power and they weight about 50lbs more than a C4.

One more question, would it be better to buy a slightly beefed up c4new, or just find an older one and have it rebuilt and upgraded? I dont plan on make HUGE power but a decent bit. Hopefully around 350 to 400 hp, and 400 to 500 torque.

The C6 is integral bellhousing too. They're heavy but bulletproof. A C4 can be bulletproofed, but you have to do a couple major things to avoid problems...The C5 (used from 1982-on) was a C4 that had these mods; basically better oiling.

Joker, you'll be okay with a C4 and just put a good input-shaft and forward drum in it. Combine it with a T.C., good clutches, and a valve-body & you'll be fine at 400 hp.
:nice:

I have just changed over to a c4 and asked the same questions. The c4 is like the turbo 400 compared to the 350 stronger but not necessary for the smaller cubes. I ended up with a c4 from art carr had a good deal going on at that time. They now have a c4 complete kit on sale I think its going for 1800 sounds steep but that is c4 reverse manual valve body harden input hd servo and clutches, fully rollerized, bellhousing, torque convertor ,deep pan, dipstick, lines and cooler perfect for any converting from a 5spd.

$1800 isnt a bad deal at considering you get all the stuff that goes with the tranny.
