View Full Version : How much boost is too much?

I have a Vortech V1 charger thats putting out 6psi right now.
I would like to change the crank pulley & the blower pulley. What size can I goto? How much boost can I get out of this charger without killing it?
Also I planned to upgrade to 42lb injectors, larger mass air & 75mm T/B.
edit: What is this charger called? A-Trim?? S-Trim?? & will pulleys from other Vortechs work as long as they are the same rib?
Thanks
Carl :metal:

I believe it would a S trim.
Depending on your tune you could go up to 14 psi

How old is the blower? A-trim's also said V1 on the housing. I spun an A up to 13psi, but it wasn't very efficient. Went to a T-trim from there and the same pulley setup made 17#'s. T-trim=much more efficiency!
If it came with the 5-6# setup than it's either a A or SC-trim. The SC is the old S-trim, so they can be spun pretty high. So, we just need to know a little more info on the head unit.

I don't know about that part number, but the V1 could be an A-trim or an S-trim. Depends on the compressor wheel. If it has curved edges, it's an S-trim. Max around 14-15 psi. THe A-trim: about 9-10 psi. After that, they are generating more heat & you're better off upgrading the cam, etc.. to take the extra air.

Also I'm runnin a 3.33 charger pulley. What pulley sizes do you recommend to get 10psi?
Thanks guys.. You have been a huge help.. :chug:

A 6.87 crank and a 3.33 upper will make 10psi on a smaller combo heads etc. the s trim will make 18 psi and is capable of about 610 to the tires through a stick depending on combo of course. I realy like the s trims for a street strip car that is driven on a regular basis.

I believe that's the SC trim. Nice blower either way. Take it to 10 at the very least.

Well guys.. is it a
SC trim, A Trim or S Trim?
Also can I get away with using a 73mm M/A, 70mm T/B & 36lb injectors?

Pretty sure thats an S-Trim. All of a sudden my confidence isnt what it should be. S-Trims as stated from Vortech can see 20 psi. While it migh not be the most efficient its possible.
I ran an S-Trim to about 11# on a mild H/C/I and made 488 rwhp then I fixed my sneaky vacuum leaks and saw 14-15#s. The pulley combo I used was a 7" crank with a 2.95" blower pulley 8 rib. I would suggest you run an 8" crank with a 3.33" blower pulley, this should net you 15#s pretty easily and keep belt slip to a minimum.
This is where I get all my pullies:

S-trim. (Blade leading edge curves over). 36's and the other stuff can get you around 450 at the wheels.

Did it come stock with the 6" lower pulley and the 3.33 upper(5-6#setup)? If so, it's an SC trim. Remember, it's the same design as the older S trims.
and yes you can get away with using that setup. Just regulate the fuel. 36#'ers will take you pretty far.

SC huh??.. So what kinda power & max boost can I get out of the SC??
Thanks again guys. :metal:

Helical cut gear profile with SQ technology
Near silent operation
Fits engines up to 680 horsepower
Maximum airflow: 1,000 CFM *
Maximum boost pressure: 20 PSI *
Maximum impeller speed: 53,000 RPM
Adiabatic efficiency: 75% **
Available with straight or curved dischargeStraight cut spur gear
Direct from Vortech. The SC is the essentially the same as the S-Trim only it has a helical cut gears and a different stup ratio. Meaning you will have to spin RPM on the blower to get the same boost as the S. Like I said, an 8" renegade crank pulley and 3.33" blower pulley will be all you will need.
