I figured I'll have about $240 if I take my block to the machine shop and $365 if they have to align hone it. My friend just got a job at summit racing so he gets everything at cost. Would I be better off to buy the block in the link below. Would I have to have any machine work done on the new block or is it ready for everything?

I'm rebuilding so the block needs cleaned, bore & hone, new freeze & galley plugs, check align bore, and hopefully that's it, that will cost me $240, but i figure for another $150-$200 I could get a brand new block.

That's what I'm trying to find out, I would assume it is but you know what assuming does.

even a new block will require machining or at least inspection

Just to throw something out there.. you can get a completely machined block from DSS for $625. :nice:

Personnely if I have my choice between a older used but machined block, or a new one (which will still need to be checked out at a minimum) I would go for the old used block all day long.

The advantage is that it has been "seasoned" or heat cycle so many times that nothing will change in it during the it's life after you have it machined.

The only time I would go with a new block is if is an aftermarket block which has generally a better pouring process and uses better materials than a high volume low cost block.

true as stated above, but what are your ultimate power goals? What sort of "duty" will this see?

I thimk I'll just stick with my used block, the motor will see around 400rwhp so nothing crazy. And it's just going to be a weekend street machine for me to have fun with and I don't think it'll see a track that much, but who knows I might take it to the track and get addicted and it could turn into a track only car:metal: !! That's not the plan but who the hell knows.
