4:10's or 4:30's

should i run 4:10's or 4:30's?

the car wont see the interstate much but probably will once and a while.
also what size tire do you suggest?

its a street car but when it is brought to the track it will be running in the 1/4 i do not like 1/8, more more than anything its a street car. 4:30's caught my attention when i saw they were cheaper and heard RPMS arnt that bad

Depending on your future power gains, I would go with 3.73's. 4.10's will put you in 5th gear at the 1/4 mile traps.

When my car hooks well I almost run out of gear with the 3.73's

imma swap the gear along with my input shaft whenever i decide to get the sc but im asking for a gear with the current mods, what do ya say?

with 4:10's and 26.5 in tires ill still be in the powerband crossing the traps

I had a set of 4.30s in my car last year when I drove it 250 miles to ffw in atlanta, It got 20 mpg on the interstate, and it ran like hell at the track, I put a set of 3.73s in it so I could spray it all the way down the track....It actually slowed down on the motor with the 3.73s...with the 4.30s in it, at 60mph, it was turning about 3500 rpm down the interstate..

Personally I would go with 3.55's or 3.73's. In my opinion 3.55's are about the perfect gear for a mildly built 5.0

WHAT?!!?? I can't believe what I am hearing!! Have any of you guys ever run a 4.30 gear? It's really not that bad. I have a VERY hard time believing he owuld be out of gear by the 1/4. His mods don't put him at 115 on motor, so I would say he will be crossing the line in the sweet spot.

I ran them in my Mark with the TKO and almost the same combo as him (306, TFS heads, mild .540" lift cam, etc. etc.) and would trap 107-110 on motor at about 5500 in 4th with the 4.30's and about 5900 at 122-124 on the spray.

:think: isnt alot of this decision going to be based on how high RPM he can turn? which isnt going to be no where near what yours is. :shrug: my car isnt even that fast and i cant imagine going with anything steeper than 3:73 for something that sees mostly street duty.

Depending on how good of 60' I have, I run out of gear with the 3.73's when I was on the spray and now with the supercharger.

4.10's in his application would be good but have to come out when the blower goes on.

No I have never ran 4.30's in a pushrod motor. I do know that 4.30's would be great in a 4v cobra

But he doesn't have spray or a charger right now. That's why I vote 4.30's.

Agreed, once the blower goes on, some 3.73's will need to go in.

the reason im not worried abotu a blower gear right now is that is probably 2-3 years away, so i want a sweet gear in this setup that i can really enjoy for those 2 years

I ran 4.10's in the '85 for years, I can't remember freeway cruising RPM's but I ran the car at 70MPH from Chicago to Daytona and got around 22 MPG (Carb car).
I ran a 26" tall tire in the 1/4 and would be just under 6000 at the line, it was great for that.

4.30's and 26 inch MT ET Drags. Drive it like you hate it.

I am running 4.88's and 28 inch MT ET Drags and love it. Don't fear the gear, you will just be putting them in later. Might as well do it right now and be done with it. 4.30's are easy for a TKO setup like yours.

having had a million sets of gears....in my 5 speed N/A car i loved it when it had the 4.30's i drove it everywhere.....so my vote for your combo is the 4.30's
