View Full Version : New Project for the Coupe

Italian LX

Lee and I went to pick up my next project for the coupe last night.... 351w

It obviously needs to cleaned up and also get rid of that damn 2bbl intake. First on the list is to completely tear it down and put all new bearings rings, seals, gaskets, and a timing chain in it.

My short term goal is to convert it to fuel injection and put it in the coupe as it sits (stock heads and cam). This way, I can get a dyno baseline and also drive it around as a 351 while I save enough money for the second stage of the swap which will consist of replacing all the internals and opt up to a 427 stroker.

Long term goal is to eventually have a 7.0L TT.

What year is it, whats it from?

are you going to leave those heads on it, or will the ones on the coupe work?

Ahh, Eric beat me to it. I was trying to pull this info up. I was thinking you could use a roller cam in these blocks as long as you tapped the galley for the spyder.

It's from a '74 Torino. The haeds I have now are Lee's GT40 irons; they won't work unless I drill them for 1/2" bolts. Right now, I'm just going to see what the stock heads do and then get some AFR's down the road.

I will be ordering this one....click me (http://www.mustang-unl.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=EDL3884+01) .

Brian I have a friend that can do the drilling of the heads for a good price if ya want to keep the GT-40s. Just let me know and I will get a price for ya.

Thanks for the offer, but these are Lee's heads that I'm borrowing and I won't be modifying them in any way. Basides, I want to get a baseline of the orginal motor (with exception of the intake, of course ;)).

I am also considering a 351W for my project when I finally get a car. A buddy of mine has a 351 he said I could have/buy.
Right now I'm just looking at the options to see what I would be able to afford. Even a mild 351 would be sick in a coupe.

hey, what would it take to convert your old Z to a 5.0? Is it for sell? :jester:

I know they make conversion kits for a 350 in the Z cars; I'm sure they have them for 5.0L as well. However, the Z is not for sale. Besides, there is so much rust damage to it, that it would take a great deal of time and money just to get it to street-worthy.

Well, as I expected, the internals look like crap so far. Although, it doesn't matter anyway since I had already planned to tear it all the way down and put a good cleaning on it.

I'm with Nathan, just a 427 would be plenty of power enough. What power level you planning?

Hey Brian, I have a BRAND NEW pair of 351W heads for pedastal mount rockers here I'll make you a deal on ;). That way you don't have to worry about pulling one of those studs(and you will ;)) or redo them and add screw in studs...

But if you want to do that I also have a pair of '69 351W heads which is what the GT40's were patterned from.

Go ahead and send it to the machine shop to atleast have it honed and check the cylinders for trueness, I did the re-ring and bearing on the motor I have in the car right now and unfortunately it did not work as I wanted it to. I thought it was gonna be a good idea with the motor only having under 20k miles on it.

Yeah, I decided yesterday just to go forth with the stroker motor and not even bother with assembling it back as a 351. It would just be added work of having to pull the motor again, and I would likely end up with less power than I have right now.

Decisions, decisions. . .
