View Full Version : Question about buying a 7.3 PSD

I know there isn't a forum for this, but I am interested... A Friend has a '99 F-250 7.3 PSD he is selling and I am interested in buying it. It has 173k miles, 6 spd manual, 4x4, Lariat etc... Are these reliable engines? I am sure being a diesel that 173k miles isn't very bad mileage. How is the mpg on these trucks? Is there alot of maintenance upkeep on them? His dad owns a brick laying construction company and they have been using it as a work truck to drive back and forth to bham for the past year or so. Anyway I thought I would get some input if anyone knows anything about these!

Thanks!

David

I have around 4 months experience with mine. I love it!!! Once you get one, you will never go back to a gas burner for a truck. MPG is around 18 (stock was around 14mpg I think) depending on the gear ratio (mine has 3.73's) That's in town or interstate.

If you are borrowing the money to get the truck, go ahead and get an addtonal $500 or so to get a chip and filter. This will REALLY wake the truck up and put you in the 18-20 mpg range. Do not think twice about this! It is a night and day difference.

Oil changes are at 7500 mile intervals and it is recommended to replace the fuel filter at least once a year.

Lee's truck owns. I seriously think he could give some of the Mustangs on this board a run for their money in that thing, and it gets pretty decent mileage to be so damn big.

Not when he first got it. Before the tune and clean air filter, that thing wouldn't even hang with the Focus.

. . . of course, now it's a different story. :burnout:

Well that's what I meant. That tune is supposed to add like 75 hp or something crazy like that, so it was pretty sluggish before. I've never ridden in it on the "extreme" setting or whatever it's called that adds like 125 hp.

Using the internet racing method, the extreme setting adds 130 rwhp and 200 rwtq.

Middle setting is around an addtional 100 rwhp and 150 rwtq. Tow setting is 60 rwhp more and 80 rwtq (I think)

We've got an F250 SDPSD CC SB here at work. 4x4, airbagged, with prob. 3/4 of its miles pulling various trailers ranging from a simple flatbed to a 24' gooseneck capable of carrying 22k pounds.

It's a 99 model with about 320k miles or so, last I saw...

yeah diesels aren't 'broke in' until 100k miles. Then they are usually good to go until about 500k-600k miles

:slap:

Of course it is. . . there's no way an OHC motor would make that much torque. :D

:werd:

And I heard they get good results from a throttle body swap. :poke: From Lee's other thread.

do it.get th etruck.i had a lot of money invested in my black f150 and thought i would miss it when i got my f250 a few weeks ago.i do not even miss that truck at all.

as for the chip/filter issue....thats a definite.but i would also do a set of guages...mainly boost and EGT.i am planning on doing my guages as soon as i get back from vacation.nothing like a 7000 pound truck that outruns stock and mildly modded mustangs like nothing :D

don't they make wideband kits for psd? just get a wideband instead of an egt if you can afford it.

Don't need a wideband

a/f is not critical on a diesel as far as leaning it out to make power. You make power on them by over richening. (more black smoke :D )
