decided that since my brakes were taking forever that i would clean the car up some. So I degrease the engine, i spray the valve covers and intake, wipe them off, then start the car. Then I start to notice smoke coming from the vents with the A/C off. So I walk around to the passenger side and there is white/gray smoke coming from behind the passenger head near the fire wall. So I blow the smoke out of the way but there is no way to see where it is coming from, so I cut the car off and the smoke stops. It smells like burning oil and not electrical. I am guessing it is either a bad valve cover gasket or head gasket. Is this common in this area?

Please note I have never had the car up to normal operating temps before so I have no idea if this is normal for the car.

are you sure its not coolant?

Can't figure out how oil smoke would be going through the a/c vents

Qwksnke is right; check to see if it's a coolant leak.

Either one of the hoses to or from the heater core has a leak, or the heater core itself has a leak.

The smoke could be sucked in through the fresh air inlet in the cowl.

hmm it did look like it was coming from those 2 tubes behind that head, and it did smell like burning coolant.

You probably knocked a chunk of caked oil/grease onto the header and it's smoking like an old Chevrolet now.

guess I will bust out my flash light and see if I can find the problem later

so now the brakes and smog pump delete are on the back burner :(

Brakes are more important than heater core. Just bypass the bastard and worry about it later...when you can afford to have someone else replace it.

i thought without a heater core the car would over heat?

nope.

You just won't have any heat when it gets cold again

well hell i can wait on that, how hard is it to bypass?

There are 2 hard lines running down the intake to the hoses that go through the firewall to the heater core. Take the 2 fire wall hoses off and find you a 'u' shaped hose to join the 2 hard lines that run down the intake (front to back) together where the coolant circulates from one hard line to the other.

is there a coolant sensor t-ed into one of the hoses connection to the heater core.

Not trying to be an a** but this is the sensor I'm talking about. I'm not sure if it is lincoln specific but my 88 mark vii motor has this sensor. All i know is it reads coolant tempeture.
