Flywheel Question: Rebuildable and Removable Weights
 

While recently shopping for a new flywheel, I have noticed a few companies that offer flywheels with rebuildable friction areas and removable weights. The rebuildable surface allows you to replace the worn area (approx $90) instead of getting the flywheel turned and the removable weights allow you to change between 50oz, 28oz, and zero balance.

I’m wondering if any of you have had experience with these or at least heard about them.

Fidanza is a company out of Ohio. I can speak from direct experience because they made some adjustable cam sprockets for the 2.3 that I used to sell....I say "used to" because I discontinued them because of a serious decrease in quality from the first batch I had bought from them. At first they were pretty good...not great and nowhere near as nice as Race Engineering sprockets but the price was less too....then the next batch I received was VERY poor...you could not even see the timing mark without straining your eyes and then you still had a hard time and they where not machined cleanly enough which forced me to spend another hour per part to buff and clean edges so that it was actually adjustable once installed. Because of this I stopped selling them.

As far as their flywheels go....I used to carry Mueller aluminum flywheels and have one in my SVO and the Evolution SVO...quality was outstanding but due to a death the company shut down. While I sold Mueller a rep from Fidanza was always trying to get me to buy their flywheels....doing some research I found that their flywheels were not as thick as some others which can lead to a problem on a flywheel due to the nature of its useage(warping, etc) and the quality was nowhere near that of what I was used to. I would not sell them for the 2.3 for that reason and that I already had a better product.

I can't speak from a 5.0 point on their flywheels because I have not used one...Fidanza is who supplies SPEC with all their aluminum flywheels. The friction area must be removable because the flywheel is aluminum and the friction area is steel...this is good because you can replace it if necessary without having to buy another flywheel.

As far as bolt on weights....provided the fastening hardware is of good quality there should be no problem with the weights.

Well, despite the issues I had with the Fidanza stuff I can't see SPEC selling them if they have problems so you would probably be fine with those. It's been a while since I looked into flywheels but you might also try McLeod as I believe they had one of their own....But I will also check with my supplier on one since I have to call them for you today on the 351 stuff anyway and see what I can come up with ;)

Are the flywheels with the removable sections and wieghts SFI rated and approved?
