Holset opinions.

Is anyone on here running a Holset on your 2.3? I have a brand new H1C that I have been back and forth on using or selling. My 2.3 currently has 316,000 miles on it and I dont have time for a rebuild right now so the Holset just sits on the shelf. I know some of the Ranger 2.3T guys are but I wanted to see what your opinions of them were.

Not a bad sized turbo...but kinda depends on the turbin housing on it. It may be more suited to a diesel...like most Holsets are. Pics?

its a 16cm2 housing. Pics are HERE

I have read up a little on Holsets but not enough to know if I would want to put one on my SVO

That turbine housing is too big...the little ford motor will hang it's tongue out trying to do anything with that.

I know this isnt the 5.0 section, but do you think it would run on a 5.0?

Well, I don't care for the compressor side for a V8. It's too small. Kinda a catch 22. But it's great for a diesel in the 3-5 liter range.

I've seen a Holset (HX35 IIRC) do very well on a Buick GN, but it had the turbine housing adapted from a buick GN...so, kinda a hybrid turbo.

What you need is a T3/T4 hybrid. SVOBrown has the perfect setup IMO: a 50 trim compressor and a Stage 3 turbine wheel. In an SVO .63 A/R turbine housing. It's a bolt-on turbo and they run great.

I've used the 60 trim and the 50. Also depends what you want to do with it. Drag race the larger will make you happy. Street and DD you want the smaller trim. Unless you have really low gears. Listen to coupe on the turbo's, he knows some stuff.

I had planned on it being an around town cruiser/weekend bruiser. I really wanted to find an HX35 but this one came along and I got a deal on it so I figured if nothing else I could resell it. My Ranger stock came with 3.73's but its in the 7.5 and I dont plan on keeping that long when I drop the motor back in.

The 7.5 will take about all a turbo 2.3 will dish out...just a heads-up to maybe divert your money elsewhere. You can get good axles for the 7.5 and the trac-loc is fine.

That HX35 worked well on the GN...but the Garrett 60-1 totally runs circles around it...in the low, mid, and upper RPM. Sell the holset.

Thanks SVOBrown.
