Re: good combo for a lightweight vehicle

For the way you are looking at running this truck (using it as a truck), I would suggest going for a cam with some nice low end torque built into it. Something along the line of the 93 Cobra cam, or even the stock cam.

I know, everyone thinks the 93 Cobra cam sucks. Well, it was made to boost torque at lower rpms, and you will be glad you have then when it comes to hauling loads and making trips across the country.

Ported E7's would be nice - they'll keep nice air velocity at low rpms and not have the big ports of the windsor juniors. Also, their peak torque/HP rpm range will be lower, which is what you want in a daily driver. Plus with a mild torque building cam, those 500-1000 mile drives will be much more enjoyable without the eec fighting the damn cam all the time...

Re: good combo for a lightweight vehicle

I think the E-303 cam and the Crane 2030 are the same Cams aren't they? Either way, I wouldn't have a problem using the E cam and advancing it 2 degrees with that setup. It would make plenty of torque with the setup you mentioned. I would use the Jrs if you want more HP. If you are after torque, then a ported set of the E7 heads would work very well.

The first complete engine setup I had on my 3340 lb Mustang (back in 1995) was a ported set of E7's (1.90 intake, 1.60 exhaust valves and thermactor bump removed), an E-303 cam installed straight up, extrude honed stock EFI manifold, 65 mm throttle body, 75 mm bullet mass air (19 lb cal), MAC 1 5/8 headers, 3.73 gears, MAC under drive pulleys, stock 1.6 rocker arms and a stock T-5. The car went a best of 12.8's@106 and was GREAT on the street. You could blow the tires off at will and the torque was VERY fun on the street.

Had I known then, what I know now about racing, I think I could of done better. The only thing I will say that you should be aware of is the idle issue with the E-303 camshaft. You will need to get a idle air bypass plate that bolts right on to the EGR/Throttle body (Mustangs Unlimited and Summit sells them for about $20 or so). You can adjust your idle with it nicely. It is much cheaper to use than a aftermarket tuner but not nearly as efficient. It has two allen wrench bolts that you adjust in or out for idle quality after you bolt it on. If you have a TwEECer or something like that, I would skip the idle air bypass plate and use that. I still run one of these plates on my car today along with the TwEECer and it works great.

Good luck. Your truck ought to work very well for what you are wanting it to do.

Hmmm, I've been running an E cam for the past 2 years and never had an idling issue.

Re: good combo for a lightweight vehicle

k.o. now for more questions. Seems as the E7's wtih some work will do what i want, now, how about the 1.7 on the exhaust, 1.6 intake trick. Once again, this is NOT a max hp motor, just a real responsive 5.0 for the bowtie boys
Will the stock HO injectors flow enough, or do i need to step up to 24 lb units?
On the subject of the mass air unit, can i use a stock unit, or do i need to step up to a 65 or 70 mm?
once again, thanks for all the imput

Re: good combo for a lightweight vehicle

19's should be enough. An upgrade of the MAF would be a nice addition...

Re: good combo for a lightweight vehicle

With my stock 302 with ported E7's, 95 intake, F-cam, and 1.6 rr I made 260rwhp and 290 rwtq all with out tuning or anything so there was more in it.
