5.0 Starter Problem
I didnt see a thread to put this so i posted in closest thing i thought this post would fit in at, im just looking for some help, i had gotten this site from a person who works at an advanced auto parts place, so maybe admins wont mind me posting here, if you do please move it to the correct place because i could find anywhere else to post it.
I have an 89 Mustang GT 302ci 5.0 i have been having problems with the start for some time, and can't just seem to get it fixed I have replaced the start 7 times with the same type of starter and I had just recently bought a Torque mini starter which seems to start it and turn it over and run but now the issue is while it's starting as it's turning over it makes an annoying grinding sound and starts sometimes hard to start it, i dont wanna jus keep trying to start it like this, i thinking it might be the battery not putting off enough cranking amps. i had taken the transmission out to replace the clutch flywheel and start, everything is brand new. i just bought the torque start yesturday and put it in, and its still grinding even though everything is brand new... I hope I have explained everything thoroughly to be of understanding for people to help me out with this.. Any help is much appreciated thanks... |

So the starter AND the flywheel are new? As Swammi mentioned, is the block plate still installed?
Typically the only time a starter will grind is when the teeth on the flywheel or the starter bendix are shot

It could also be the wrong type of starter. The auto and 5 speed starters have different nose cones and offsets.

The wiring isnt right.
you need to rewire your solenoid to correct the problem. Move the cable going from the solenoid to the starter to the same side of the solenoid as the other cables and then run a 8 gauge wire from the other side of the solenoid down to the small wire location on the new starter.....problem solved

The big battery cable going to the starter needs to be moved one terminal to the left with the other wiring and battery cable.
then the wire that goes to the slip on crimp needs to be put where the starter cable was at all by itself. What is happeninig is your starter is staying energized for 3-5 seconds upon startup and wiring it correctly as I showed will cure this problem.

the bottom picture is how your new wiring should look for proper function.
