3650 ?

I am changing my bell houseing out. Does the 3 rods coming out of the trans set a certain way into the bell houseing? And what else do i need to check?

Out of couriosity, why are you changing out the bell housing?

What "three rods" are you talking about? When you take off the bell housing, there will be the main shaft, cluster shaft, shift shaft and reverse shaft. Each has it's own place to go in the bell housing; it will be obvious which goes where.

The main concern is the end play in both the cluster and main shaft. If you swap to a different bell housing, the differences in manufacturing could change the end play. So, it would be best to check both and shim them correctly.

However, if you're not too worried about the longevity of your transmission, you could just transfer the old shims and bearing races to the new bell housing and go with that.

The tob retainer is broke. They are 3 rods that go into the bell that have groves in them. It has springs that are held in by set screws on the bell for them rods. I want it to last. This is still a jam up trans.

Yeah, I was thinking that the 3650 was very similar to a T45... i just looked at the exploded view and it appears to be a bit different.

I'm not 100% sure because I have never opened up a 3650, but the rods should only go in one way (they are fasted to the shift forks and shouldn't be able to turn). It appears that the springs push against a plunger that "click" into the detents on each shift rod. If you're familiar with a T5 or T45, this would be the equvalent to the spring and ball under the shifter block (the 3650 doesn't have this).

I'm guessing you will have to have the "set screws" springs and plunger out of the bell housing when you assemble it... then put them in when it's together.

I hope what I'm typing makes some sense.

BTW, I still recommend checking the end play for the main shaft and cluster.

Ideally, there shouldn't be any play at all. (I think the tolerance actually allows for up to .004" of play, but anymore than that and you'll want to increase the shim thickness.)

Both shafts have pocket-style caged bearings, so you can actually put a bit of preload on them, but you should limit this to no more than .004" of preload.
