Driveline issues
Weve got a problem with the drivetrain in the 93. We think its in the rearend. This is what it does: When we have the car jacked up in the back and put it into gear it will start klunking once in a while. Its not constant. Also today when I was driving it to school I was in 3rd or 4th gear and when I left off the gas and then back on it it would klunk again. Also when the car is in the air the driveshaft(aluminum) has a lot of play in it (roughly .5" to either the left or right (going by the bolts). When it klunked on jacks the whole rearend shook. If it is the rearend what kind of parts should I look at (mainly brands).
Thanks. Also the tranny has been rebuilt and the clutch and flywheel have been replaced (spec stage 1 and spec aluminum flywheel). |

Sounds like there maybe some worn clutch packs in the carrier

sounds like either the u-joints or spider gears are broken....been there done that...it sounds awful....check those 2, I bet its one of those

If you're on, then off the gas and it clunks when doing it...you probably just need to tighten your control-arm bolts that mount to the torque boxes...
Or upgrade the units.

well I took it into the shop and seen that the driveshaft bolts werent tightened all the way. We tightened them and it go rid of it. However when the rear is up on jackstands it will still make the noise. Dont know if thats just pinion angle or no lubrication or what. Thanks for your help guys. Ill check the things yall mentioned just ot be sure.

FYI a word to the wise, make sure you put blue lock-tite on the driveshaft bolts.

old worn ring & pinion will have slop...does what you mention when car is on stands. You can turn driveshat back & forth and the rear-gears just kinda clunk and take up the slack with no real tire motion.

Ive heard of putting locktite on the bolts and I did that but we took them out in automechanics and I aint put any back on yet. Yes Coupe the shaft does have quite a bit of slack in it. You can turn the shaft about .5" side to side (twisting it). When you do that you can hear the gears hitting eating other.

I use red loctite, I guess blue would work too. Those things always work themselves loose without it.
