You must not remember what the ride quality is like with a live axle. Not to mention it is a whole lot easier to replace a halfshaft than it is an axle when it breaks.

Live axle is not going to make you any faster.

I can't think of a single reason to get rid of an IRS unless you're concerned with making it a lighter (I believe it's something like 100 pounds heavier), but if you're that concerned with weight you've probably gone to a tubular K member, minimalist interior, etc and the streetability is going out the window anyway.
