Measurement

How can you tell how many mm a turbo is?And how much boost its capable of?Just curious

1)The size in mm is a generic measurementof the turbo...it's the diameter of the inlet of the compressor wheel; the tip-to-tip measurement of the blades. However, other parts of the turbo determine it's application just as much as the size of the compressor wheel. For instance, a "66mm" turbo found on a diesel will not do so well on a gas-motor and vice-versa.

2)Several factors determine the boost a turbo can make. A good place to start is something called a compressor-map. It is a fluid-mechanical diagram of the compressors ability to flow air...ultimately making horsepower.

.
The entire wheel or just the blades visible at the inlet?

Inlet only. The overall diameter is not a common measurement, but it is used to calculate the "trim" of the compressor.

You measure the inducer and exducer to get the area to radius, The turbine A/R tells about when it will spool and the compressor A/R will tell how much air it will move. Identify the turbo then find its compressor map, This will tell you everything you want to know.

Incorrect. You measure the area of the volute at a certain radius from the centerline. It is an attribute of how "tightly would" the shape is.

Along with the turbine wheel and compressor wheel in those housings.

This is a garret turbo it says A/R 76 on the intake housing. It is 3inches from tip of blade to tip on the front. So what size is this turbo?

Sorry, I was thinking A/R but inducer/exducer gives trim.

That particular model number sounds familiar!
