if you are just pulling the tranny and not the clutch you don't have to pull the starter on a t-56. It is setup like a t-5 where the tranny comes away from the bell housing externally

OT: this is not the first instance i've heard of t-56's being trashed from spirited shifting...buddy has an 03 he bought an threw a whipple on it and third went out on him..not exactly sure what provoked it, in racing terms, but it's more common than you think..
nothing's happend with mine yet, but i'm not much of a racer either..and i think unless your goin big twin screw or turbo in a race app, your gonna be fine.. most of the big termy guys makin big power, switch to an auto or a viper spec T56 jus cause it can take a lot more abuse than the Ford t-56..(i know it sounds insane.."a t-56 that can only handle bout 400 hp"
