GT-40P Head question.

I found some GT-40 P heads from a 97 Ford Explorer 5.0. I was wondering if $250 for the set was a good price? If purchased, I would like to upgrade the springs and what nots, mabye have'em ported and polished. Would this be worth it? I can't afford to buy a new set of heads right now, so I am going the cheap thrill route. What's your opinion?

BTW, Will be putting them on my 87 GT.

that price sounds good to me but I have only been looking at 5.0 parts for a while

but I would imagine that everyone is going to tell you that you should do the H/C/I at one time

maybe a GT-40 intake and a letter cam

Are you going to port and polish them yourself? If you are planning on hiring it out it is very expensive especially with cast iron heads.

Just bolt them on and do a cam change and run it

Lee, What about a spring upgrade on them, cause I cannot do the port and polish job. Also, Will these require different headers?

Definitly do a spring upgrade. It is requirement if you stick any aftermarket cam in the motor.

There is a header issue but I cannot remember which ones will work or not work

I am pretty sure it will require different headers

i think 96 is the only year that did not since they are GT-40s and not Ps

I am not the person to ask (if you were asking me)

I would wait for Lee, Brian, or Matt to chime in

it might help to know the plan for the car, street/strip, DD, n2o, ect

The header issue is that you have to have "P" specific shorties, but long tubes are no issues.

Trickflow offers an OEM replacement spring that Summit carries for around $120

Cam to go with those heads would probably be FRPP 'b' , 'e', or the TFS stage 1 cam. Anything beyond that would be a waste because those heads stop flowing at .500 lift. Also, any of those cams would work best with 3.73's out back
