sounds like popping through the intake

Got the fairmont running.....ANYWAY.

background info:

timing set to ~10* with spout out
FP set to ~39PSI with vac. disconnected
TFS heads with 3924's gapped to .050
EGR disconnected (off road bassani x pipe)

OK...now the problem, it smells rich as hell but I was under the impression that popping through the intake was lean?

also, IAC may be suspect as idle "searches" a little (not bad) (I have removed and sprayed liberally with carb/choke cleaner to no avail).

Secondary problem, when under load (getting onto the gas) it pops/skips BAD. Plugs are fresh, coil is NEW, wires are almost new....this is really getting to my last nerve, any help would be appreciated.
