You do not have to get one to check, Cut a hole in a old cap in line with no 1 terminal, Start engine, put timing light on #1 terminal just like you were going to set timing, instead shine light in hole in cap, Throttle up slowly and watch rotor in relation to post. It can be adjusted other ways but the easy way is a adjustable rotor.
