Post Tools for Engine Builders:

Below you'll find a well rounded list of tools to get the job done when building or rebuilding your engine.

Here’s what you’re going to need to get started:

Set of Flat Head and Phillips Head Screwdrivers of all sizes
Set of open/box end wrenches (1/4” – 1”)
Set of Allen Wrenches (SAE and Metric)
3/8” Drive Socket Set (3/8” – 3/4”)
3/8” Deep Well Sockets (3/8” – 3/4”)
1/2" Drive Socket Set (7/16” – 1-1/4”)
1/2” Deep Well Sockets (7/16” – 1-1/4”)
1/2" Drive Breaker Bar
Pliers
Needle Nose Pliers
Diagonal Cutting Pliers
C-Clip Pliers
Set of Vice Grips
Set of Punches
Small and Large Hammers
A Five-Pound Sledge Hammer
Torque Wrench
Drill and Bits
Putty Knife or Gasket Scraper
Hack Saw (use 24 teeth-inch for best results with metal)
Magnetic Bolt Tray
Large Top Chest or Heavy Duty Tool Box with Drawers

Tools to Rent or Buy:

Piston-Ring Compressor
Harmonic Balancer Puller
Valvespring Compressor
Freeze Plug Driver
Seal Driver
Thread Chaser
Small Grinder (if you port your own heads)
Easy Outs (for broken bolts)
Engine Hoist
Engine Stand
Degree Wheel & Pointer
Dial Indicator

There are numerous specific specialty tools that can make the job a bit easier (swivel extensions, ratchet wrenches, ect...) but the above list will be a huge step towards having a set of tools fit for any mechanics garage.

Good list, but I'd like to add a couple of things, especially when building engines....

Cylinder hone
Feeler gauge(s)
Piston ring pliers
Small magnet pick up tool (comes in handy on valve locks)
Dial caliper

Not trying to jack your thread, but they are needed when building one up.Also fairly inexpensive.
