ignition pats help

long story short. the other night when the temp dropped down so low, my car like to have never started. eventually it did, however it ran really badly for several miles then cleared up. the following morning it wouldn't start no matter how many times i have tried. got to be something in the ignition because it turning over great and you can smell the raw fuel. its not the coil. i know there is something in the distributor that controls spark (i think anyway). what all other options are there. need to get this back on the road since it our only means of transportation. my luck some jack ass with no insurance totaled my wife's car. thanks for alll suggestions.

it could also be that it is just cold as crap and you cranking it over for any period of time is not letting the spark catch up to it before it starts to flood the motor. after a mile or two it will clear up. next time turn it over for five seconds if it doesnt start open the throttle all the way and keep it there till it cranks. the eec4 system cuts fuel on start up if it is held. mine used to do that till some one told me to try it and i never have problems anymore.

its on the GT. making matters worse the car is not at home. i would imagine that if the distributor has to be removed that my timing is going to be jacked after replacing it. is that correct? which leads me to also aquiring a timing light. isn't the gear at the bottom of the shaft sometimes rather difficult to remove.

Distributor swap is a piece of cake...even without a timing gun, you can get it real close. Another thing I was thinking was with the low-low freezing temperatures we've had, there might be moisture or water frozen on something causing it to either remain open or shut...then with engine temp, it remedies itself.

Just a suggestion.

thanks so much. i truly hope it doesn't come to that. i am thinking that surely i can pull the dizzy without turning the button too far off. at least within a amount less enough i can get it timed again under its own power.

to be curious, what is going on out of country.
