Alternator rebuild
Okay, as some of you might know, I have what some consider as a polishing fetish. My alternator is one of the last couple parts on my motor that I haven't done yet. What I have is a 130 amp 1-wire alternator. It's in a stock 86-93 style housing. Is this something that I can easily take apart to polish? Or should I take it to a shop, have it disassembled, do my thing and have them put it back together? I just don't want to screw myself. Thanks!!!

Well it's been a while but I took mine apart in my old 96 cobra to clean and paint it. I can't remember specifics but I do remember it wasn't hard to do.

Do I need any special tools? I know I'm gonna have to impact the pulley off, I was just wondering if there is anything special. Thanks!!!

They are not to hard to rebuild, IIRC getting the brushes in place is the only hard part, but last time I rebuilt one was about 15 years ago.

No thanks - I'd rather piss on a spark plug!

Yeah you'll need the impact but I don't think there are any other special tools you will need. Like Craig said the brushes are a little tricky just because they have to be pushed in to get the armature back in place. I would recommend taking it apart slow and taking pictures since it may be apart for a little while, just to be sure you don't forget how it goes back together. |
