289 build
well since i got the 84 mustang out of the way im now going to start on my 66 stang now. so far i have a 289 motor that is a c8 casting, it came with a 2bbl from factory with 8 to 7 compression. right now im looking for forged piston, rods, and crank kit that has a 10/5 compression, if i can get away with it ill keep the stock crank to save a little money. but i looked in the summit catlog and the smallest kit was a 306, im shure that they have the kits avalable but i dont know where to look. also i dont know what the best company to go with. plus i want to keep the stock displacement if possible.

If you're not looking to make HUGE horsepower, the stock rods and crank are not bad at all. I would consider having them checked, possibly recondition the rods, and get a set of pistons for it. That thing would purr like a kitten.
There's alot to be said about keeping it 289 cubic inches. I like the idea. Summit probably won't help you much on this project.

302 pistons will work in a 289, The difference in stroke is made up with the connecting rod length. The compression height of the piston is the same(1.60 nominal) but the rods are 5.155(289) and 5.09(302). The stock 289 rods and crank are plenty strong for any street car.

Hey I have a new still in the box comp cam (270H) for a 289 if you're interested. I bought it years ago for my old 67 fastback but sold the car before it was finished like an idiot. Anyway if you want it I'll take $50.
