Do you have access to a impact? you are going to need it

I have a 1985 and a 1988 Ford service manual I could check for you, if memory serves me right, I think they are around 25-30 ft.lbs. (let me check for sure though).

Also make sure that you use a loc-tite on the threads.

Yea I found a guy with the specs on the ford 9.75 rearend and it was 22lb/ft.
Ill pick some loc-tite up today. :nice:

I dont think it will a problem. Nothing a breaker bar cant fix. ;)

you will need one for the pinion nut since it appears you are replacing the pinion seal

Lee,

I think he is replacing an outter axle seal.

I also thought he was replacing the pinion seal....I re-read his first post...now I see.

Yeah, you can get it off easily with a breaker bar by removing the nut while the axles are still in, but when you put it back on, you'll need something to keep the pinion from turning (keep in mind, the carrier and axles won't be installed yet). An inpact will allow someone to hold the pinion gear by hand while you tighten it; without an impact, you'll need a bar bolted to the pinion flange to keep it from moving.

I made one of these bars a few weeks ago when I replace my pinion bearings. I just flattened the end of a piece of angle iron and drilled two hole the distance of two drive shaft bolts. I was actually able to sufficiently compress a brand new crush sleeve in my carport wth only a breaker ratchet. . . but it was definitely a major pain in the ass.

Oooohh, I see.

My axle seals don't have a flange to them, so I assumed it was a pinion seal.

I guess I wasnt clear about it. It was an axle seal. It all went real well no problems and didnt even need a breaker bar. I couldnt get the rotor to turn loose so I just left it on the axle and pulled it all out. Thats the biggest damn ring and pinion gear Ive ever seen!!
