What gear do I have?

OK.. I know your all sick of seeing all my posts but I have 1 more..

I bought this car a few weeks ago.. I check all the forums that the owner posted in. I wanted to see if the car had any past issues. OK with that said.. All the posts say the car has 3.73 gears. The guy I bought it from said the gears were stock. He said 80% of the mods were done to the car by the guy that owned it before him. The person passed away & he bought the car from the guys wife. The guy that passed away did a hell of a job building this car. It started out as an '87 GT but has been updated to a '93 LX. In & out (It even has the air bag) Sorry I'm getting off topic here.. I was going to have a 3.73 installed next week but now I don't know if the car has one or not..

Check out the pic.

How can I find out what gear the car has?

Thanks
Carl

Good idea.. I never thought of that.

I havent been able to drive the car yet, I bought it with a nasty oil leak (lower rear intake seal). I just fixed it but I have a ton of snow. As soon as the streets dry up a bit.. I'll take it out & check.

Thanks

Re: What gear do I have?

you can pull the cover and read the #'s that are stamped on the ring gear. It should say something like 41-11 somewhere. This is referring to the teeth on both gears. you can divide this number to find out what you have

Re: What gear do I have?

I agree with pulling the cover and either finding the stamp or just counting the teeth on each gear.

You can also get an idea of what gears you have by lifting the rear tires off the ground, turning the rear wheels by hand, and count how many times the driveshaft rotates for each rotation of the back wheels (make sure both tires are both rotating the same direction and at the same speed).

You may not be able to tell the differnce between 3.55 and 3.73, but you should be able to tell if it's close.

Re: What gear do I have?

jack up rear of car mark tire and drive shaft have a friend turn the tire exactly one rotation using mark as reference as you lay under the car and count the number of drive shaft rotations. with one complete tire rotation for 3.08 gears, driveshaft will turn 3 complete turns plus .08 of a turn. (approx 3 1/8 turns) with 3.55 gears driveshaft will turn 3 complete turns plus .55 of a turn (approx.3 1/2 turns). with 3.73 gears driveshaft will turn 3 complete turns plus .73 (approx 31/4 turns) 4.10 gears 4.1 turns ect......

Re: What gear do I have?

Like above. Jack up car...spin driveshaft looking at a reference point on the tire.
